CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The calico cat trotted beside Marty as she walked down the cobblestone street of downtown Whale Harbor, the leash held loosely in her hand. With her other hand, she took a sip of her latte from Seastar Espresso, tryingâand failingâto enjoy the moment.
It was a calm Sunday afternoon, complete with a blue, cloudless sky overhead and a cool salty breeze from the ocean. It should have been perfect and, after the hectic Saturday sheâd had at the Clownfish Eatery, Marty knew she should be in heaven enjoying her day off.
But she wasnât.
She still felt the residual stress from the chaotic shift at the diner and, if she was being honest with herself, she was still feeling off from her time at Wyattâs quad race. Marty shuddered a little as she remembered the event. She had felt so out of place in the crowd of cheering, hardcore fans. If someone had pointed a spotlight on her and written âMisfitâ on her forehead in Sharpie, she couldnât have felt more like she stuck out like a sore thumb.
It had been nice of Wyatt to include her, she knew that. And she also knew that he hadnât expected her to fall in love with the sport or be super knowledgeable about it or anything. Still, it had felt like one more reminder that she didnât really fit in with his interests or his lifestyle. It was a glaring reminder of just how different the two of them were, perhaps too different to ever make something work.
Marty shifted restlessly as she walked down the street, guiding the calico cat beside her. She just felt so⦠she didnât even know how to put into words what she was feeling. Restless? Sad? Uncertain?
Whateverâs going on with me, I donât like it, she thought, taking another sip of her latte and once again failing to enjoy the warm drink.
She had felt off ever since the quad event and she was, quite frankly, tired of feeling like she was crawling out of her skin with the discomfort of it all. She kept telling herself to buck up and cheer up, but the mental pep talks werenât working. Instead, the cloud of conflicting emotions just seemed to weigh on her more heavily, making her thoughts spin and causing her to feel out of sorts with herself and everybody else.
Her eyes burned with fresh tears as she settled herself down on a public bench. The calico cat hopped up beside her and she stroked its fur absentmindedly, not even feeling better when she felt it purr at her touch. To her deep annoyance, a tear spilled over the edge of her lashes and trailed down her cheek, leaving a salty track. She swiped at it almost angrily, but it was soon followed by more tears.
Marty was, in a word, miserable.
What am I going to do about Wyatt? she thought, tracing a finger around the edge of her paper coffee cup. This is such a mess.
There was a huge part
